Personal Emergency Response system (PERS)

Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS), also known as Medical Emergency Response Systems, let you call for help in an emergency by pushing a button. PERS come in three major categories. Traditional landline PERS, Mobile cellular(MPERS) and non-monitored PERS.

Some PERS devices are available with features such as automatic fall detection.

When the button is pushed or (when available) a fall is detected the alarm is first sent to a certified central alarm station(monitored systems only) to verify the emergency and to contact the local responders.

Traditional PERS

Traditional landline options has three components: a small radio transmitter, a console connected to your telephone, and an emergency response center that monitors calls. Traditional PERS are limited to the home however, they typically cost less for monthly monitoring.

MPERS

MPERS have a cellular communicator built into the wearable button complete with 2-way audio communication. Because the communication device built within the wearable unit it can be worn outside the home and used anywhere the unit can still maintain a cellular signal. Some MPERS are available with location tracking features for use with persons prone to wandering.

Non-monitored PERS

Similar to Traditional PERS, Non-monitored PERS have a small radio transmitter and a console connected to the telephone. However, when the button is activated the console initiates calls to a preprogrammed list of telephone numbers. This traditionally includes family members, neighbors and/or other caregivers. Non-monitored PERS tend to be the least expensive option because they do not include a monthly subscription to a certified central station.
